There should be a warning label on this book. Caution: Flammable because oh sweet lord... You know that scene in Bruce Almighty? The one where Jennifer Aniston is in the bathroom just after Jim Carrey gets his powers and he's sending those vibes through the door and she's like:
Yeah. That scene. That's basically a perfect example of what it was like reading this book. *Fans self* It's a combination of two of my favorite tropes, the older brother's best friend mixed with friends to lovers. It was funny, sweet, steamy as all hell and just the right amount of tension and "will they or won't they" to make this one delicious read.
I loved the sweet and yet frustrated Penny. Though we don't really get to see a lot of the protective older brother bit mentioned in the blurb and are mostly, up until a brief moment at the end, just told about Ryder's chasing guys off and I would have loved to see more of that. Been able to experience it. The only other thing that bothered me with the whole Penny situation is how at a few different moments she was almost desperate when it came to Sebastian. They enter their two week arrangement and she's relentless with her pursuit of "tell me you feel something! I know you feel something!" that she would bombard him with. Not that it was a bad thing she was doing but I almost wanted to say have some self respect girl because she was like a dog with a bone and it got sort of annoying. But I guess you can't say the girl does't have any determination! She was also very feisty and a challenging in a sense when it came to Sebastian. She knew all the right buttons to push and she was the perfect girl to break down the walls of control that Bass surrounds himself with.
Speaking of Bass...Oh. My. Gosh. I love me some alpha male and that boy screams all sorts of sexy alpha. He's all about control, discipline and the rough and dirty. And when I say rough and dirty, I mean rough and dirty! I'm surprised by the end of the book if Penny even has any underwear left because when they were alone together and she'd push his buttons he wouldn't take them off her, he usually ended up ripping them off. Hooooot! But I think the one thing I enjoyed the most when it came to Sebastian is watching that carefully perfected discipline and control start to slip every time he was around Penny. Watching that internal war within his head and heart as he would attempt to convince himself that it was only two weeks and then he'd walk away and they'd go back to their friendship even though he finally had something he'd wanted for the longest time. Penny.
The chemistry with these two characters was off the charts. The storyline was just the right amount of give and take. It pulled me in and kept me engaged all the way to the end and I genuinely cared to know what would happen with these characters. All of them! I haven't read the first book in this series yet but since this is a big group of friends the books center around I was able to see enough of them to pique my interest. I'm looking forward to reading more from Joya Ryan in the future.
