The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection
between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

This novella takes place about a year before the events of Obsidian start. I highly recommend reading, at the very least, the first two in the series Obsidian and Onyx first. Not that it makes a major difference. But for me part of what I enjoyed so much was the discovering of different secrets and situations reading through books 1-3. This book brings you back in time and answers some questions about Bethany and Dawson that you don't get into in the rest of the series.  It's their story and leads you right up to their disappearance.

I created a soft spot for Dawson at the very beginning of Opal, strangely enough, when Katy wakes up at the crack of dawn to find him in her room sitting on her bed. So broken and empty and yet he let Katy in. It was just a great scene to me.

The story of Bethany and Dawson is very sweet and romantic and passionate and yet so full of sorrow and tragedy. I am so glad that Jennifer L. Armentrout wrote this story. Since most of the things that happened between these two was in secret, due to exposure risk, you really don't know much apart from they disappeared and through the first book at least were thought to have been dead. Since Obsidian - Opal are from Katy's POV all you get from Dawson and Bethany are the bits and pieces that family and friends know which is 3 days after they come down from a hiking trip in the mountains, covered in blood, they disappear when going to the movies. And since what happened between them is a huge link to what happens between Katy and Daemon, I always wondered what happened that day.  Plus reading this feeds my Lux obsession a little bit ;)

It also helped me to sympathize more with Daemon and his first reaction to Katy. Living through, in a sense, what he went through with the loss of his brother gave me a better understanding of the mistrust and dislike for this human girl who had done nothing but simply move in next door.  Though I did want to gag coming across an Ash/Daemon scene. Bleh! But yeah, it was pretty emotional what everyone went through.

A great addition to the Lux series.
